Heroes Before the Man of Steel

Personal Bio

About the Author

Heroes, heroes have always intrigued me. Whether it be knights rescuing princesses from the clutches of dragons or Percy Jackson fighting Kronos. I was greatly fascinated by knights, so I read all kinds of books on them and watched shows based on the Arthurian Legends. I watched all of Trollhunters and Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, and I immediately fell in love with the characters. I also read all of the Percy Jackson books and the Kane Chronicles. I enjoyed learning about the myths and legends and the characters in the books were very relatable. All of this sparked my love for heroes. And I hope I do them justice in my mentor project.

Greek Myths

Perseus

Greek Myths gave us the first heroes, without them we wouldn’t have all these crazy superheroes. These myths were typically used as warnings; most of them telling people not to disrespect the Gods. But some of the myths, like that of  Perseus; they are there for people to enjoy. Epic tales of man’s mastery over monsters, or even over themselves. In this video I retell the tale of Perseus.

Greek Myths

The Twelve Labors of Herakles

Hercules is the Roman name for Herakles, he got the name when the Greek Mythology was adopted by the Romans. The Romans changed a lot about the Greek Myths, Cerberus isn’t even his greek name, his Greek name is Kerberos. Herakles means “Glory to Hera”; which is funny because until he becomes a God and goes to Olympus, Hera hated Herakles. Hera sent two snakes to end Herakles as a baby, but Herakles simply used them as baby rattles. I put this video on the Twelve Labors of Herakles for you to learn more about him.

Greek Myths

Greek Pottery

The Greeks liked to use pottery to show scenes from myths. A lot of what we know about Greek Mythology came from Greek pottery. In my mentor class you will get to draw a superhero’s symbol on a paper vase. Symbols are used for heroes to distinguish themselves as the good guys. Originally symbols were very crude and on the nose, like Batman‘s symbol being a bat or Superman‘s being an ‘S’. Now certain symbols have meaning or aren’t just based on their name. The Punisher‘s symbol is a skull that he had when he fought in Vietnam; or Iron Fist‘s being the dragon he defeated that gave him his name.

Arthurian Legends

Knights of the Roundtable and Others

In this video I go over the main characters of the Arthurian Legends and tell a little bit about what happened in the Legends. From Sir Lancelot to Merlin the Enchanter or Morgan Le Fay to Mordred the Betrayer, there is quite the handful of characters in Arthurian Legends.

Arthurian Legends

Sir Cumference and the First Round Table

KING ARTHUR HAS A PROBLEM!

When his knights get together, they sit at such a long table that everyone has to shout to be heard. Can Sir Cumference and Lady Di of Ameter “Measure up” to the challenge of building a better table?

Watch this video on the First Round Table and learn a bit about circles. While in my mentor class I will you a little more about circles, like how to find the area of one and what a diameter is.

Arthurian Legends

Coat of Arms

Coats of arms are commonly confused with a family crest. A family crest is kind of like a symbol of status. Families that were of high status had a family crest, this was typically used to distinguish people of status from the common rabble. To the left is the coat of arms of the Holy Roman Empire. While in my mentor class, the older kids will get to design their own personal coat of arms using colors and ‘metals’. They will choose from a variety of animals/beasts to use on their crest, as well as learn about how to tell if a crest is likely fake or not.

I must ride with my knights to defend what was, and the dream of what could be.

King Arthur Pendragon

I don’t believe in Heaven, I’ve been living in this H***. But if you represent what Heaven is, then take me there.

Sir Lancelot

Camelot isn’t built on magic, but on people, on their faith.

Merlin the Enchanter
